Outside chance of storms enters picture for Thursday

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Thursday afternoon is going to be extremely hot, but it will also come with a small chance for thunderstorms that could back wind gusts over 60 mph.

The day will begin warm with lows around 80, but once the sun comes up, it’s off to the races for the temperature. The setup is similar to Sunday when Houston’s high hit 108 as light northerly winds cause to atmosphere to cook. We are predicting the high will hit 107 right as a disturbance is rolling around the heat ridge from the northeast. This disturbance will combine with the extreme heat to bubble up showers and a few thunderstorms, some of which could throw down severe wind gusts capable of downing tree limbs and knocking out the power in some Houston-area neighborhoods.. The storms will blow in from the northeast and quickly spread to the southwest. After the sun sets, the storms will fizzle.

Are there any more opportunities for rain in the forecast?

Yes! Early next week a storm front will blow down the Plains as the heat ridge slides toward the west coast. This front will push into Southeast Texas sometime Monday and Tuesday, generating a chance for more downpours. By Wednesday, we should feel drier air behind the front, and that lower humidity will stick around for a few days.

Does this mean we’ll get some cooler temperatures?

Not exactly. In fact, we are going to continue to cook with daily highs near 105 until the front arrives. After it blows in, low temperatures will drop into the mid 70s, but highs will still hover around 100.

Now that Harold is gone, what else are you monitoring in the tropics right now?
