Giants cut running back James Robinson as final roster takes shape

Clarity is coming to the Giants’ backfield as running back James Robinson was given his walking papers Sunday.

The Giants officially waived Robinson as part of Sunday’s cuts, which featured 10 other players as of early afternoon.

Robinson received plenty of reps in the Giants’ preseason finale against the Jets, including a highlight reel 10-yard plunge where he carried several Jets tacklers.

The 25-year-old also had a 20-yard scamper where he stiff-armed Hard Knocks favorite Chazz Surratt, the former North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback turned linebacker.

Robinson’s final chance to showcase his talents concluded with 10 touches for 55 yards Saturday, while also showing off his burst that he hopes will land him on another NFL roster.

The Jets ultimately prevailed, 32-24, with Gang Green’s starters playing a few drives during the game.

Despite his solid showing, the Giants passed on keeping Robinson as part of their running back depth behind Saquon Barkley.

It would seem the Giants are going to continue forward with backup Matt Breida alongside some combination of Gary Brightwell, Eric Gray and Jashaun Corbin.

Robinson had a cup of coffee with the Jets in 2022 after being acquired midseason to help replace the injured Breece Hall. He wound up playing in just four games with the team.

The Giants signed Robinson in July while Barkley held out, but once the star returned, Robinson faced an uphill battle to make the team’s final roster.

Robinson rushed for 1,070 yards and seven touchdowns in his rookie season with the Jaguars in 2020, but has not matched that level of success since.

He tallied just 767 rushing yards in his sophomore season and the Jaguars opted for Travis Etienne Jr. as their lead back before trading him to the Jets last season.

There will be further clarity on the Giants’ roster before Tuesday as the roster crunch hits its final days.

New York opens the season Sept. 10 when it faces Dak Prescott and the Cowboys at MetLife Stadium.
